I just finally saw the new Pride and Prejudice. I'll have to watch it several more times before I have a fully formed opinion/review, of course, but my initial impression is OH MY GOODNESS. Yes, they changed/condensed some things in ways I wasn't thrilled with, but overall I think they were right on with the tone. It seemed the most realistic of the Austen adaptations I've seen, I think. And. Matthew Macfadyen is PERFECT as Darcy. PERFECT. I loved Judi Dench as always, too, and I know people have been down on her but I thought Keira Knightley was great. I really liked what they did with Mary's character, and Charlotte's, too. Although, honestly, I would have forgiven them a lot in return for Macfadyen. Really, just for Macfadyen saying "You have bewitched me, body and soul." Or, you know, for Macfadyen just looking all tortured and smoldering. Most ardently.
Okay, off to go reread the book...

Sigh....Colin Firth will always be Mark Darcy to me...at least my favorite one. I'll have to take a peek at this one though. A stable of Mark Darcy's isn't necessarily a bad thing.
Mark Darcy is in Bridget Jones' Diary. Mr. Darcy in P&P is Fitzwilliam Darcy.
I didn't care for McFadyen much; he lacked the intensity and... sort of regalness that Darcy needs. I liked the casting pretty well in this one, though, except for the dad. Ugh.
I watched it for the third time last night (twice in the theater) and this time around I was most annoyed by the way they'd build up like they were going to deliver a line straight from the book and then veer off into more modern speech patterns after all.
Still, a very pretty movie. I loved the dance scenes and the light especially. And Mr. Collins is a RIOT.
Colin Firth will always be Mr Darcy to me, but Matthew MacFadyen wasn't bad, once I got over him not being Tom on MI-5. They really got the flavor and tone of the book but the close ups of Keira Knightly drove me crazy!
