What's wrong with guacamole manufacturers?

Food and cooking

I made quesadillas for some friends last weekend, and I didn't have time to make guacamole that day, so I figured I'd just buy some. Easy enough, right? Well. It was easy enough to buy, but all the brands of guacamole at my grocery store were in plastic pouches or other non-reclosable packaging. Why is this? It has been suggested that the manufacturers are simply trying to make sure that we have to keep buying more guacamole instead of saving one package until we finish it, which makes sense, as far as it goes. But why guacamole? If that's the reasoning, why don't manufacturers use the same reasoning and same packaging for other dips? Anyone have any ideas?

I know; the solution to this is just to make the guacamole oneself. Anyone have a favorite recipe?

I just stick mine in a ziplock bag or container. It is still good for a couple of days after opening - I typically eat it fast.

I don't know if I would call it a recipe but what I do is to simply mash up an avocado with lemon juice (keeps it from turning an icky color), add salt to taste and also a couple of tablespoons of your favorite tomato based salsa. Could't be easier and it's delicious.

I think the best way is to just smush the avocado and add minced garlic and fresh lime juice to taste.

i think they do that because it's going to brown after you open it, so it would be gross if it were in a tub like hummus or salsa. why they don't make the plastic pouches resealable, i don't know.

Avocados don't keep very well once they are opened and exposed to air. I like the 2 sealed pouches per box that I get at Trader Joes. I usually use one pouch and stick the other in the freezer for next time.

I agree with Kate & Lynne about avocados not looking so good after they hit air. It's easy enough to make them, pretty much the way everyone has already said.

Have you seen that Carl's Jr commercial where an avocado cut in half is rolling around in the blender? Cracks me up. Reminds me of the story of my mom and aunt eating artichokes for the first time. They tried to eat the whole leaf. Hahahaha.
